According to "Claim for Minors' Pension", Brief in the case of George C. Grinnell, minor child of George R. Grinnell, Private, Co. 97 NY Volunteers, the residence of guardian is Grant, Herkimer County, New York.  It includes the attending physician's testimony that George C. Grinnell was born July 25, 1862. 

On June 2, 1866, a Surrogate's Court held for the County of Herkimer , and upon the application and petition of Lucy Ann Carpenter, appointed Lucy Ann Carpenter of the town of Grant in the county of Herkimer guardian to George C. Grinnell, minor child, son of George R. Grinnell, deceased until he shall attain the age of 14 years until another shall be appointed, the said guardian having filed in the Surrogate's Office, the bond with sufficient surety required by law. 

In the 1885 Otter Tail, Otter Tail County census George C. Grinnell, 23, is listed as living with Peris Hempstreat, 65, Fannie Hempstreat, 56, Bessie Hempstreat 14 , Jenny Grinnell, 21 and Jay I. Grinnell, 0.

The 1900 U.S. Census from Lawrence, Grant County, MN shows Jennie Jones, estimated age 36, living with spouse, James H. and family members Mina Jones, Stephen Jones, Walter Jones and Jamie Jones.  Jens Jopson is also listed in the household.

Grant County is a neighboring county to Otter Tail County.  In 1901, they may have moved to Otter Tail County according to the Battle Lake Review July 1901 which shows James Jones as working as  Otter Tail County Game Warden.

The 1910 census shows them living in Fergus FAlls Ward 3, Otter Tail County, MN with the following family members:  James H, age 52, Jennie, age 46, Walter E, age 16 and James, age 11.

Jay Ira Grinnell's birth certificate whows him as being born in the Town of Otter Tail.  Parents were George C. Grinnell and Jennie Louisa Grinnell, both born in New York.  Jay was born March 27, 1885 but the birth certificate was not filed until May 22, 1885. 

Obituary from the Fergus Falls, MN Daily Journal August 27, 1918:

Jay Grinnell, the oldest son of Mrs. J. H. Jones died at his home in Enderlin, N.D. of Infantile Paralysis, Aug. 4, 1918, at the age of 33 years, 4 months and 14 days.

He was born in Ottertail, Minn., March 27, 1885.  He leaves a wife and two children to mourn his untimely death besides a mother and many relatives and friends.

From the Perham Enterprise Bulletin, 1/24/1895.  "Jay Grinnell sent to Public School at Owatonna instead of reform school as his relatives wanted."

1900 Federal Census:  Jay Grinnell, Byron, Waseca, Minnesota, age 15, estimated birth 1885, birth place Minnesota, relationship to head-of-house, boarder, race, white.  Hosuehold members:  Jacob W. Pierce, Sarah A. Pierce, Bertrice M. Pierce, Claud A. Pierce, Jay Grinnell.
